Project Summary

Fèis Thròndairnis was established in 1993 and aims to ensure that our local culture is passed on to the next generation. We work in the community by running a week-long summer school in Gaelic arts, sport and dancing for young people ages 8-18 as well as ongoing fundraising activities throughout the year in the form of concerts and Cèilidhs.

Project Description

Fèis Thròndairnis - main Fèis

Fèis Thròndairnis provides a week of Gaelic arts and culture activities to young people in the Trotternish area of Skye and will take place this year from 20th to 24th July. Classes on offer include piping, accordion, shinty and highland dancing, and many of the classes are offered in Gaelic-medium. There is also a tutors’ concert and a participants’ Cèilidh which are open to all. The Fèis employs ten tutors and two supervisors, most of whom are local, and last year had 50 participants aged 8 - 18. This year, registration has opened and 30 participants have registered within the first few days so it looks to be even more popular this year. Fèis Thròndairnis is located in Staffin in the north of Skye, a small village surrounded by many crofting townships which are spread out across a large area. Each year we organised buses so that participants can easily get to and from the Fèis without parents having to organise transport. However, this has been expensive to run, and these costs are set to increase with the price of fuel.
