A Voyage of Connection
In July 2026, 10 Sea savers aged 12 - 19 aim to embark from Ullapool Harbour on a 5-day voyage with Ocean Youth Trust. During the voyage we will learn sailing and seamanship, build bonds of friendship and trust within the group, boost confidence and skills and deepen connection with the ocean, reinforcing our passion and commitment for the vital work we do to protect it.
In the build-up to departure, throughout the voyage and into the future we will share their experience: encouraging, facilitating and supporting future trips for other groups. OYT have opted to use Ullapool as a base for their voyages because of an encounter between our groups at the YouthLink Scotland National Youth Work Awards 2025. Conversations that evening revolved around how to bring the incredible experience of OYT voyaging to more kids from isolated regions of Scotland.
A core intention of this trip is as a high-profile example of the benefits of this incredible potential resource that spreads throughout Highland, leading to many more trips for other youth groups in future years.
Accompanying us will be Ocean Advocate Cal Major – together we will teach the crew of the OYT vessel about the astonishing biodiversity of our local Marine Protected Area, the importance of protecting our seas in the prevention of climate change and how to participate in citizen science programmes to support marine protection. We really hope to boost their engagement in and capacity for supporting marine protection and ocean advocacy with future groups.
